- I've lived in Charlotte for more than 20 years. I inherited my love for cooking from my grandmother and mother, like so many others. One of the best gifts I've ever received if my grandmother's well-worn copy of "The Escoffier Cook Book," by A. Escoffier. It's tattered and brown around the edges, but it helps me stay close to her.

- Those that are fresh and full of flavor. I enjoy Vietnamese food because it combines cooked and raw foods in such a satisfying and vibrant way.
