HB 2524 UNANIMOUSLY PASSES THE HOUSE HEALTH COMMITTEE

NORTH CAROLINA RAW MILK ACTION ALERT

Representative Pricey Harrison successfully presented HB 2524 to the House Health Committee today, which resulted in a unanimous victory. Thanks to all for your emails, letters, and phone calls, and a special thanks to all who were able to meet committee members this morning. It was very encouraging to receive such a positive response.

Last week, the Ag Department indicated that they were willing to work on a compromise. Their first offering was even more restrictive than the rule. We continued to negotiate. During the process, I stressed the need to exempt pet milk from commercial feed definitions. In return, the Ag Department asked that pet milk containers be labeled, "Not for Human Consumption" and "The Sale of Raw Milk is Not Legal for Human Consumption in North Carolina". HB 2524 now includes both of these.

With the compromise added to the bill, we now have the support of both the Ag Department and the Health Department!

Two hurdles down and three to go. The full House votes on HB 2524 tomorrow. If successful, it will cross over to the Senate for a committee vote and then a full Senate vote. Next week is the last week of session, so we must work quickly to get HB 2524 through in time.

NEW TALKING POINTS FOR HB 2524 – RAW MILK FOR PETS

HB 2524 is a "disapproval" bill. It was introduced by Representative Pricey Harrison to block the rule adopted by the Ag Department, which requires that all raw milk sold as "pet milk" be denatured with a charcoal colored dye.

HB 2524 passed both the House Agriculture and Health Committees with overwhelming majorities.

The Agriculture Department and constituents in favor of HB 2524 have worked together with Rep. Harrison to reach a compromise on HB 2524.

Pet milk will be labeled, "Not for Human Consumption" and "It Is Not Legal to Sell Raw Mill for Human Consumption in North Carolina". Commissioner Troxler approves.

The Agriculture Department and the Public Health Department are now in SUPPORT of HB 2524.

This bill will provide extra income for our small farmers.
