The CEFS 10% Campaign Kicks off in Charlotte August 17th to Encourage Local Food Consumption (at Atherton Market)

Local food and the local economy are about to get a local boost. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Food Policy Council is organizing a festive and informative event on Tuesday, August 17th from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm at the Atherton Market at Atherton Mill to kick off the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) 10% Campaign in the Charlotte area.

CEFS is partnering with organizations and communities throughout NC to encourage consumers to consider how they spend their food dollars. The 10% Campaign is funded by the Golden Leaf Foundation, and specifically asks buyers to commit 10% of their food dollars to support local food producers, related businesses and communities for at least the next year. Charlotte-based Compass Group and North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service have partnered with CEFS and are actively supporting the implementation of the 10% Campaign.

You can get started today on the 10% Campaign Web site, but plan to attend the 10% Campaign kickoff event in person to enjoy cooking demos, ask questions to local nutritional counselors, enjoy kids activities, and to sign up on the spot. In addition, lots of fresh local food will be available from the Atherton Market vendors to help you get started right away! The market is open until 6:30 pm, and the opportunity to sign up with your commitment will be available on site all day, and again on Saturday at the Atherton Market. Look for news soon about opportunities to sign up at other area farmers markets.
