SUMMARY:Vandana Shiva to lecture at Davidson College
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity and Conservation Activist, Dr. Vandana Shiva,
will deliver a public lecture entitled \"Sustainability and the Globa
 l Food Crisis\" at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 1, 2010.\n\nFree and open
to the public. Directions\n\nDr. Vandana Shiva, 1993 recipient of the
Right Livelihood Award (also known as the \"Alternative Nobel Peace P
rize\"), can be described as an eco-feminist and environmental activis
 t. Hailing from the Dehradun Valley of India, the daughter of a forest
conservator and farmer, Vandana Shiva grew up with a love and appreci
ation for nature and a particular interest in the protection of her ow
n backyard-the foothills of the Himalayas.\n\nA trained physicist (Ph.
 D. Physics, University of Western Ontario), Dr. Shiva shifted her focu
s from Quantum Theory to an interdisciplinary study of the intersectio
n of science, technology and the environment, and has been a leader in
the conservation movement since the 1970s. In 1991, she founded a nat
ional movement to protect India's biodiversity and promote organic far
ming and fair trade.\n\nShe has authored several books, including Eart
h Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace and Manifestos on the
Future of Food and Seed. Much of her recent work deals with the econom
ic and environmental influence of agricultural practices on developing
countries. Dr. Shiva currently serves on a variety of councils and co
mmittees that deal with issues of food, the environment, and social ju
stice.\n\nDr. Shiva's lecture will be followed by a short Q&A and book
  signing.\n\nFor more information visit http://slowfoodcharlotte.org/e
