SUMMARY:Field Trip to See a Permaculture Nursery, Small Farms, and a C
 oHousing Project
DESCRIPTION:Learn about plants that can enhance food production at you
r neighborhood, community, or farm\n\nCost: $10-15 per person, dependi
ng on attendance; bring a sack lunch\n\nRegistration: Seating is limit
ed, therefore, advance registration is required. Contact christy.shi@g
mail.com to register.\n\nTrip Leaders: Olivia Bearden 704-488-7093 and
Gordon Peck 704-402-0621\n\nThe main purpose of this trip is to explo
re visit Useful Plants, a permaculture nursery located near Black Moun
tain. Useful Plants Nursery grows and markets the plants necessary for
individuals and communities to grow their own nutritious and deliciou
s food while contributing to the ecological regeneration of their bior
egions. While there, you will also have the opportunity to visit other
parts of the EarthHaven EcoVillage:\n\nGateway Farm, one of the more
technically complex farms here and home to two of the more brilliant p
eople in western NC\n\nImani Farm, a small beef and dairy farm\n\nYell
owroot Farm, a small 2-field biodynamic operation largely growing vege
tables\n\nVillage Terraces, a cohousing neighborhood and one of the la
rgest buildings on the land\n\nThe Council Hall, one of the most inter
esting buildings on the land (the floor is 100 % recycled marble and w
ood with a lot of geometry encoded in it).\nI\nn short, permaculture i
s a way of incorporating food production into existing landscapes. The
concept goes much further, however. Bill Mollison, co-originator of t
he concept of permaculture, defines it as: “[a design system] based
on the observation of natural systems, the wisdom contained in traditi
onal farming systems, and modern scientific and technological knowledg
 e. Although based on good ecological models, permaculture creates a cu
ltivated ecology, which is designed to produce more human and animal f
ood than is generally found in nature.”\n\nFor more information visi
